Pedro Hernández
Biography
Pedro Hernández was born in 1927 in Mexico City and studied at the Academia de San José, the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas and the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Fotografía “La Esmeralda”.
Hernández has had more than 50 solo exhibitions and has participated in more than 500 group exhibitions, both in Mexico and abroad including the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Museo Carrillo Gil, the Museo de Arte Moderno, the National Academy Galleries in New York and the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum.
His works can be found in the collections of the Mexican Museum of Photography and Printing in Russia, the Alfredo Guati Rojo National Photography Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Dublin and the Amecatlel Museum in Mexico City. He has also mounted exhibitions at the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana, of which he is a member.
His work is a combination of elements drawn from the real mixed with the fantastic. His idea is to dive into the human psyche, representing in his art both the negative and positive aspects of humanity. His work often employs dark photographs (such as the mummy series, for example, see below).
The main figures in his work are generally realistic in detail, specifically his depictions of the human body, both living and dead.
Notable examples of these works include “Lord of the Flies”, “Esoteric Enigmas”, “The Mummies”, “The Human Psyche”, “Lights, Shadows and Other Things”, “Face of the 3 Deaths” among others.
He currently lives in Mexico City.
